Vintage Haitian painting - "Island Ladies" by Paul Beauvoir

Expressionism. Purchased in 1970 at an outdoor market in Haiti.

Paul Beauvoir was born in 1932, died in 1972. He was a member of the Centre d’Art but later joined Charles Obas at the Foyer des Arts Plastiques that was formed by a group of accomplished artists who were dissatisfied with the way Haitian artists were being treated. He worked very closely with Rene Exume and Emanuel Jolicouer. He is a very popular artist whose paintings can be seen in John Allen Franciscus’ book “Haiti Voodoo Kingdom to Modern Riviera” and Eva Pataki’s book “Haitian Painting Art & Kitsch”.
